The Animal Rights Media Project

Animal Rights Media was started in the Netherlands in May 2007. It is a voluntary organisation which aims to gather news and articles about animal rights issues, on a local and global level, to improve communication and networking between groups. The Animal Rights Media website was launched in the Netherlands in September 2007.

Animal Rights Media is an open-posting news website. Our visitors can post their own articles on the website and add events (like demonstrations, info-nights, etc.) to the calendar.

We believe that there is a big need for such a website. There are a lot of active animal rights groups in the Netherlands, but to keep up to date about what is happening locally and globally, it can be difficult and time-consuming to find the information you want.

The purpose of Animal Rights Media is to gather news and articles from the movement and post them on the website to centralise the flow of information. In this way we can spread the word for the animals, as well as educate and inform people who are interested in animal rights issues. Animal Rights Media is run by Animal Rights activists and aims to give a positive image to the animal rights movement and supply as much information as possible about animal cruelty. The regular media outlets only talk about activists in a negative way and rarely highlight the animal cruelty that we are fighting against. Animal Rights Media is intended to provide a balanced perspective ensuring that the real reasons and motivations for our actions are explained.

A group of moderators keep the website online and ensure the quality and accuracy of the content. We’ve seen that from the moment Animal Rights Media was launched, local groups in the Netherlands co-operate more and activists are better informed about what is really happening in their country (or elsewhere in Europe or globally)! As an animal rights movement, we should use media technologies to spread our word to explain our actions and provide a response to the negative coverage we receive from the mainstream media.

We believe that we need to ‘export’ our project to other countries and that other countries (and of course the animals) will benefit from this successful project. If you are interested in our project and would like to get it online in your country, we really would love to give you support in doing so. In that way we can start up the animal rights news network around the world (like the IndyMedia-concept). In the near future we will set up a global website where people can find news and articles easily on one main website (in different languages!) and easily go to their own ‘local’ animal rights news website.
